Job costing software that runs on QuickBooks
Job costing is always on in CFOS. It works on top of QuickBooks Online and shows cost against your estimate by cost code, updated every hour. It's included in the one price.

QuickBooks keeps the books. It doesn't cost your jobs.
QuickBooks Online is good at recording what you spent. It's weak at telling you what a job should have cost and where it's headed. You can tag a bill to a customer or a project, but there's no budget behind it, so you can't see over or under until the job is done.
CFOS reads your jobs, vendors, bills and POs from QuickBooks Online and adds the parts it leaves out. That means a budget by cost code, committed cost from open POs, and a WIP schedule. Your books stay in QuickBooks, and CFOS writes back only what belongs there.
There's no migration and nothing to rebuild. Your bookkeeper keeps working the way she works today. The job side gets built on top of what she already does.
Three levels of cost code and seven cost types
Cost codes in CFOS have three levels, so you can roll a job up to a phase or drill down to a single line. A concrete sub might see flatwork, then forming, then the labor on that form crew. The same job reads at whatever level you need for the owner, the PM or the bank.
Every dollar also has one of seven cost types. Labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment and the rest stay apart, so a job that's over on materials and under on labor doesn't hide behind a flat total. When you compare jobs, you compare like with like.
If you want help laying the codes out for your trade, the done-for-you setup on /job-costing-setup covers it. You can also set it up yourself. Either way the codes follow your estimate.
The estimate becomes the budget
The number you bid is the number you manage to. CFOS imports your estimate as the job budget by cost code, so the budget isn't retyped by someone who wasn't in the bid meeting. When the bid goes in the CRM and wins, the contract value comes with it.
Budget versus actual then shows on every job by cost code, with committed cost from POs next to what's already been billed. You see the cost that's coming before the bill is in your inbox. That's the number a PM needs on a Tuesday, not three weeks after the job closes.
Costs update every hour from QuickBooks Online. A bill coded this morning shows on the job this afternoon. The budget never gets a month old.
The reports that come from job cost
Once the budget and actuals are in one place, the reports build themselves. The PM enters cost to complete at month end, it's approved, and the WIP schedule shows percent complete, earned revenue and over and under billing. There's also a master WIP across every job.
Labor comes in with burden by class, so a crew hour is priced at what it cost you. The 13 week cash forecast reads the same jobs, pay apps and bills. No one has to build these from a spreadsheet on the 9th of the month.
Each of these has its own page, linked below. Read them before you decide. They show how the numbers are built.
Already have one? Keep it
Job costing is the core of CFOS, so it's always on, and it's included in the one price like every other module. If you already use a tool for estimating, time or project management, you can keep it. Look at /connect to see how connecting works and what we need from your admin.
Most software connects in 5 business days or less, depending on the tool and your plan. What moves where is agreed in writing before anything moves. We never ask for a password.

What people ask
Do I need to move my books out of QuickBooks Online?
No. Your books never leave QuickBooks Online, and CFOS reads from and writes to it. Your bookkeeper and your CPA keep using it the same way.
How often does job cost update?
Every hour. A bill that's coded in QuickBooks Online in the morning is on the job by afternoon. The budget versus actual numbers are never a month old.
Does it work with QuickBooks Desktop?
No. CFOS works with QuickBooks Online only. More accounting systems are coming, and we'll say so when they're ready.
Is job costing an add-on I pay for?
No. Every module is included in the one price, and every module we add later is too. The bill follows your last 12 months of revenue.
