Keep your payroll company. Get burdened labor on the job.
Payroll stays with your payroll company. CFOS puts labor dollars with burden onto each job. Here's what works today and what depends on your payroll company.

What CFOS does with labor dollars
Your payroll company pays the crew, files the taxes and handles deductions, and CFOS doesn't do any of that. What CFOS does is put the labor cost on the right job by cost code, with labor burden by class added. That's the number you need to know whether a job made money, and payroll reports rarely give it to you by job.
Burden is the part most job cost reports leave out. Payroll taxes, workers' comp, insurance and benefits are real costs of the hour, and a job that looks fine at wage rates can lose money at burdened rates. CFOS adds burden by class so a laborer and an operator each get their own.
Today's link and the ones that need approval
Here's the plain answer. Today the app sends approved time to QuickBooks Payroll, and that link is built. If you do payroll in QuickBooks, the hours go from approval to payroll and the labor cost is posted to the job in CFOS.
For a payroll company outside QuickBooks, we connect through its API or through a file import, agreed in writing. With an API, your admin approves the link and we never ask for a password. With a file import, your office uploads the payroll register each pay period and CFOS reads the labor dollars by employee and job.
Payroll is the slowest link, and why
Payroll is the most valuable link to make and often the slowest. Payroll companies guard their data, and many require the tool's maker to apply and be approved before any API access is granted. We can't speed up somebody else's approval process.
So the clock starts when they approve us, not the day you ask. If your payroll company needs that approval, we apply for you, tell you how far along the approval is, and use a file import in the meantime so you aren't waiting for job cost labor. When the API link is approved, we move you over.
How long it takes
Most software connects in 5 business days or less. We don't promise that number for payroll in every case. The conditions below apply, and the one about the maker's approval counts most here.
- The tool has a documented API and your plan includes API access.
- Your admin connects it. We never ask for a password.
- What moves where is agreed in writing before we start.
- If the tool's maker has to approve us first, the clock starts the day they approve.
- If there is no API, we set up a file import instead.

What people ask
Does CFOS do my payroll?
No. Your payroll company or QuickBooks Payroll still pays your people and files the taxes. CFOS puts the labor cost on the job and sends approved time to QuickBooks Payroll when that's where you do payroll.
Which payroll companies work?
QuickBooks Payroll works today. Any other payroll company works when it has a documented API we can use, or when it can export a file we can import. We agree what moves in writing before we start.
Why would a payroll company need to approve you?
Many payroll companies review any outside tool before it can read employee data. That review is theirs to finish. The 5 business day clock starts when they approve us.
What do I get while we wait?
A file import. You upload the payroll register each period and the labor dollars with burden still go on the jobs. It's one more step for your office until the API link is approved.
- Keep the tools that work. Connect the rest.

- Labor on the job with burden, not just hours
- Make payroll
