Job costing and WIP for contractors doing $10M to $50M
Close by the 10th and give your surety a WIP that ties. CFOS works on top of QuickBooks Online and takes cost to complete from your PMs. There's no ERP project.

Your numbers are late and the WIP is a spreadsheet
At $10M to $50M, the books are good and the reports are slow. The close drags into the third week, the WIP lives in a spreadsheet and the PMs' cost to complete comes by email. You spend the month explaining numbers that were already stale when you got them.
CFOS reads QuickBooks Online every hour, so job cost is current when the month ends. PMs enter cost to complete in the software, you approve it and the WIP schedule builds from it. It's the same QuickBooks, with the month-end work moved out of spreadsheets.
Owner, controller, PMs, estimators, surety and bank
The owner signs the statements and reads the CEO Report. The controller or senior bookkeeper manages the close and owns the WIP. PMs provide cost to complete, estimators supply the budget, and the surety and the bank are the two outside readers.
Each person gets a seat with permissions. A PM sees their jobs, and estimators see bids and job budgets. The controller sees everything the close needs.
Close by the 10th, WIP that ties, PM cost to complete
Closing by the 10th depends on the month's job cost being posted and the PMs finishing on time. In CFOS the controller sees which PMs have entered cost to complete and which haven't. The approved numbers feed the WIP with over and under billing, and the master WIP rolls up the jobs.
A WIP that ties means the schedule agrees with QuickBooks, because it reads from it. When the surety or the bank asks why a job is overbilled, you can answer from the job. That changes the conversation from defending a spreadsheet to explaining a project.
Reviewed to audited statements in plain words
As you grow, the bank and surety move from compiled statements to reviewed ones, and later to audited ones. Each step means an outside CPA asks for more support. That support is the job schedule, the WIP, the aging and the reconciliations.
CFOS doesn't replace your CPA. It keeps the schedules ready and tied to QuickBooks. The request becomes an export and not a project.
What contractors at your size earn
The table shows the published averages for the $10M to $25M and $25M to $50M bands, across the 48 trades that publish figures. Net profit is before taxes. Your CEO Report grades your own results against the average and the CFOS target for your trade.
| Revenue | Overhead | Gross margin | Net profit, before taxes |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10M to $25M | 13.1% average 12.1% CFOS target | 24.6% average 27.1% CFOS target | 11.5% average 15% CFOS target |
| $25M to $50M | 12.1% average | 25.7% average | 13.7% average |
Gross margin and overhead come from figures CFMA, Jones Maresca and other sources publish by trade and size. Net profit is computed, not surveyed: net profit = gross margin minus overhead. Nothing comes out for taxes, interest or other income and expense, so it is a before tax figure, on the same basis as CFMA's net income before taxes.
CFMA's 2025 medians are 7.1 percent before interest and taxes and 6.7 percent net income before taxes. Gross margin minus overhead leaves out interest and other income and expense, so a figure here can come in a little above or below a reported net income on the same business.
Above the $10M to $25M band the gross margin and overhead rows are a modeled extension of the same curves. They have not been reconciled against the licensed CFMA Benchmarker, so read those bands as a model and not as a survey result.
Price at $10M, $14M and above
A $10M company pays $1,350 a month, and a $14M company pays $1,950 a month. From $15M the price is quoted for the company. Every module is included at every price, and it's month to month. QuickBooks Online is billed separately by Intuit.
| Your revenue, last 12 months | Per month |
|---|---|
| Up to $3M | $300 |
| Up to $4M | $450 |

No ERP project, and what that means
There's no ERP project. CFOS works with QuickBooks Online only, not QuickBooks Desktop. If you have more than one company, you get one login per company you add, because one login that rolls up several companies isn't live yet.
Over $50M, talk to us. At that size the setup is a conversation first. We'd rather learn how you work than quote you a web page.
At $10M to $50M the controller owns the close. CFOS is built around cost to complete, the WIP and the packages your surety and bank ask for. The owner reads the result.

What people ask
Can a $14M contractor close by the 10th on QuickBooks Online?
Job cost updates every hour, so the posting is already done when the month ends. The controller then waits only on PM cost to complete, which CFOS tracks by person. A company of this size pays $1,950 a month.
What does a $10M contractor pay?
A $10M company pays $1,350 a month. From $15M the price is quoted for the company. Every module is included at every price.
Do we need an ERP project to get a WIP that ties?
No. CFOS works on top of QuickBooks Online and reads from it, so the WIP ties because it comes from the same data. It doesn't work with QuickBooks Desktop.
We have several companies. Do we get one login?
You get one login per company you add. One login that rolls up several companies isn't live yet. Each company keeps its own QuickBooks Online file.
What if we're over $50M?
